NEW STAFF
Two new staff arrive at Gertrude Street. Sarah Bond is the new gallery
secretary. She has experience in both the arts and museum world. And Robyn
Phelan is the new program manager. She has been Touring Officer at Museums
Australia and National Gallery of Victoria. Most recently she has managed
the artist-run Westspace gallery's move into their new CBD location. They
join Margaret Harkness (Executive Director) and Kevin Murray (Artistic
Director).
PICK UP
A members exhibition opened 23rd March with works by Roseanne Bartley,
Miles Bennett, Nicola Cerini, Caz Guiney, Marita Knutsen, Simon Lloyd, Marc
Pascal, Jane Sawyer, Pamela Stadus, Dore Stockhausen and Marcus Foley, Vixen
Australia & Vic Wood. The exhibition coincides with the visit of the Renwick
group on 5 April. Images of the gallery installation are available on the
web site (www.lexicon.net.au/craftvic/pickup.htm).
WEB SITE
Craft Victoria's new web site will be going on line by the end of the week.
The address will be www.craftvic.asn.au (replacing
www.lexicon.net/craftvic). As we suspected, our application for an 'org.au'
domain ended without response. 'Org.au' has become the black hole of
Australian web culture; other non-profit organisations might consider
'asn.au' if looking for a domain (see www.west.net.au/asn.au).
BULLETIN
Craft Victoria members will have just received copies of the first Bulletin
of the year. Simone Leamon has edited a special issue on tools, from poetics
to practicalities.
TECHNO CRAFT
Craft Victoria's ex-president Susan Cohn was honoured with a retrospective
at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. It was opened last
Thursday by Barrie Kosky, who rallied the press with outspoken comments on
Australian culture. From early reports, the exhibition does some justice to
the career of Melbourne's brilliant and innovative metalsmith. Techno Craft
is open until 2nd July.
NEW SITES
The photographer Terence Bogue has placed some of his folio online at
www.netspace.net.au/~fotograf. His site features Victorian makers, including
Andrea Hylands.

NEW GUILD MENTALITY
One of the big projects planned for 2001 is an exhibition looking at the
history of guilds in a contemporary context. Partnerships will be encouraged
between makers and work groups that are loosely affiliated, such as web site
designers or cappuccino pullers. A call for expressions of interest will be
made soon. See web site for more details. We hope to tour this exhibition
both locally and overseas.
T2
The Brunswick street tea merchant T2 is interested in extending their range
of tea wares for sale to the public. Craft Victoria is preparing a list of
makers for T2 to consider. Ceramicists and metalsmiths who can produce pots,
cups, spoons and caddies should contact us with details. We hope to
complement T2s promotion of fine teas with an appreciation of good tea
wares. Beginning at home, Craft Victoria is looking to acquire a tea set
what will impress its own visitors.
GUIDE DOGS
Craft Victoria has been approached by the Guide Dogs Association to suggest
concepts for a memorial in their Kew centre. A tour of the site has been
scheduled for Tuesday 18 April at 4pm. If you are interested to attend,
please contact Craft Victoria.
CICELY & COLIN RIGG AWARD
In 2001, the National Gallery of Victoria will be hosting the Cicely & Colin
Rigg Award, which encourages craft production in the state. The last award
profiled artists working in metal. Next year, the focus is on textiles. More
details will be available in the near future, but in the meantime if there
is any interesting Victorian textile work you think should be noted, please
contact Kevin Murray.

INSTRUMENTAL
An exhibition planned to coincide with the Melbourne Festival will contain
work by the state's musical instrument makers. The theme of the 2000
festival is Bach and the Craft Victoria gallery will feature a daytime
exhibit that complements the concert season. Until recently, instrument
makers have included themselves in the craft scene and the festival provides
a welcome opportunity to renew that acquaintance.
SECOND WIND
With the City of Melbourne, Craft Victoria is planning an exhibition of
works made from wood discarded during the refurbishment of the Melbourne
Town Hall organ. The organ is due to be re-opened in May 2001.
STATE CRAFT COLLECTION
This year is the 30th anniversary of Craft Victoria and we are planning to
exhibit some of the State Craft Collection, which used to reside in the Meat
Market Craft Centre. As well as mapping the journey of craft over the 1970s
and 1980s, we hope the exhibition will bring into focus the future of the
state's craft heritage.
JILAMARA ARTS AND CRAFT
The gallery's May exhibition will feature collaborative works between Andrea
McNamara and Jilamara Arts and Craft from Melville Island. Jilamara Art and
Craft is due to open Friday 27th April.

HANDICRAFT
"A generation after the advent of Conceptual and electronic art,
handcrafts--long bound by tradition--have re-emerged as radical and fresh
practices. Paul Shimmel, North American curator for the most recent Sao
Paolo Biennale, has identified 'a concentration of decoration and craft as
the new common ground' for the next generation of young artists.
"Handcrafts, with their relation to the body and the physical senses,
counteract the drive toward technology and dematerialisation in our
culture."
Polly Ullrich 'The workmanship of risk: The re-emergence of handcraft in
postmodern art' _New Art Examiner_ April, 1998, p. 25
