Institutional strategies
By now all HEFCE-funded Universities have in place a learning and
teaching strategy to meet the requirements of the new Teaching
Quality Enhancement Fund. As part of this new agenda, many
institutions are seeking to promote more effective use of C&IT for
learning and teaching. In many cases, however, the strategy is an
'emergent' document, and institutions across the sector are
struggling to translate well-meaning policies into actual outcomes.
Embedding learning technologies
The TLTP3 EFFECTS project is working with institutions to evolve
their own professional development programmes which support and
recognise staff who are embedding C&IT into student learning.
However, the project has always been concerned to examine the impact
of professional development programmes at institutional level:
· What institutional factors are most crucial to the success of
learning technology developments?
· How can learning technology expertise be cascaded from early
adopters to an early majority of academic staff?
· What impact do scholarly rewards have on staff motivation to embed
C&IT?
· How can student needs analysis and pedagogical evaluation - carried
out at the programme level - be harnessed to inform institutional
learning and teaching strategy?
As a result of our evaluation work at the EFFECTS consortium
institutions, through collaboration with the TALENT project and
through consultation with the academic community at workshops and
conference sessions, the EFFECTS project has identified key
institutional issues which impact on how effectively learning
technologies are embedded into the curriculum. This led us to develop
an audit tool and institutional guidelines to facilitate the process
of institutional change.
Participants
The workshops are aimed at developers with a strategic role and
decision makers looking for new ways to encourage the take-up of
learning technology. Participant numbers will be limited to 30 to
facilitate group interaction and learning.
Aims
Participants at this workshop will be able to:
· learn about the design of different institutional programmes for
embedding C&IT into learning and teaching (including sample materials
and portfolios);
· learn about the early impacts of EFFECTS programmes at their
respective institutions;
· explore the EFFECTS guidelines for institutions and the TALENT and
EFFECTS institutional audit tools
· question representatives from the EFFECTS consortium and from the
TLTP TALENT project which is also working to encourage institutional
change;
share ideas with other developers and decision makers;
· discuss the frameworks presented in the context of their own
institutional learning and teaching strategy.
