Dear All,
I wonder if folks here aren't only getting too personal, but possibly a
little too specific (or possessive?) re the mailbase.... when I joined, I
had a very nice little note from Heather which said, just to remind one
and all...
" physio is for general information and discussion on all matters of
relevance to physiotherapists............Participation is invited from
anybody with an interest in the physiotherapy profession - academics,
undergraduate students, researchers, educators, clinicians,
administrators." There didn't seem to be any other rules on what could
or couldn't be asked/discussed.
Let's value and respect the diversity, the need to ask questions
(even if they sound stupid to some - I've been on the receiving end of
that!), the understanding that we don't all have internet access even
though we may have email, that we aren't all into research at the
moment, that we come from different continents and so our english
language and technical terms may mean different things to different
people, (and therefore to try and not misinterpret anything 'between
the lines' ), and that we work in amazingly and fascinatingly different
areas.
An important part of being a physiotherapist is in trying to
understand those we work with - to clarify, to empathise, to associate
more closely with, to learn from - how else can we help our patients,
their families, the medical staff we work with, the people we aim to
teach.... We need to apply the same to the mailbase.
Also to think that in writing emails, we write fast, from the top of our
heads, possibly in the heat of the moment, or the busy-ness of the
day, and the pressing of a little button is all that is between the
computer and the mailbase - a little re-reading before sending may be
all that is needed, - a bit like counting to ten!
I've enjoyed most of the arguments and responses from the mailbase -
it's been stimulating, and (dare I say it...?) fun! We are too vast a
group to restrict the physio mailbase to just researchers, or just
clinicians, or just educators - let people write what they wish and feel
is right without fear of criticism, - may those writing also think of
others (re content and length), and lets all be able to enjoy and learn
from it.
(How about Mel and Trevor write to each other privately to discuss,
and then send a combined final comment to the list, so we can see
where the discussion has led??)
With hopes that no-one will be offended, put out or feel criticised by
any of the above, but that others will be encouraged to participate
more!! This is a great forum!
Cheers! (as Anna says!)
