A general enquiry...
Does anyone know of the fate of St Sidwell's well, here in
Exeter? I had a discussion today with someone who said it
was lost when the medieval church was bombed in world war
two.
My brief survey of the churchyard, (or was the well,
actually in the church?) revealed no evidence of a well 'in
situ', though I did find a rectilinear stone basin of some
antiquity which looks like those found at many extant holy
well sites, and a small cross shaft base, looking very
medieval to my not entirely untrained eye in these matters.
These have been placed on some waste ground, to the south
of the Church, and are partially overgrown with ivy, and
have very lately suffered the indignity being semi-covered
in builder's rubbish thrown out during the recent
conversion of the hideous fifties church into flats.
Can anyone enlighten me any further?
Best,
Graham.
