I've used a variety of systems for bulletin board and chat type use amongst students in various classes. This year I took the easy option of setting up a Yahoo! Club for each of two classes and what I've found so far is that the level of student participation seems to be higher than previously was the case when using other more "serious" software. Students seem to have more of a feeling of ownership or like the interface, links or whatever. Of course it does have a number of restrictions but it can be an easy, maintenance free way to set up timetables, post discussions, provide links to other resources etc.
