Tide mills in Essex
The tide mill at Thorrington which is at the head of Aylesford creek off the
River Colne has been restored.
The tide pool of a former tide mill at Tollesbury is now in use as a yacht
marina.
There was a tide mill at Rochford. See Essex Record Office reference D/DS
253/7/5 for an 1810 estimate for its construction by William Carreton, mill
wright and builder of Maldon.
There was a mill at St. Osyth which may have been a tide mill and there was
a wind mill at Walton which may possibly have had a tide mill associated
with it.
I do not believe that Battlesbridge was a tide mill. There were a number of
mills in Essex that adjoined tidal water but which took their power from
fresh water streams. Examples are: Fingringhoe on the Roman River, Beeleigh
on the Chelmer and Heybridge on the Blackwater. I think Battlesbridge was
one of these and the mill used the Crouch as its water supply.
