Michael
Your recent comment that RFID tags produced for the book trade will be
unsuitable for library use is simply wrong. We have representation from
both libraries and the National Preservation Office on the BIC RFID Working
Party and are, of course, working towards a standard that would be
acceptable for both trade and library use.
There is, however, no doubt that libraries will be the leading implementors
of RFID in the book sector, well ahead of the trade. This is due to the
need to tag all the books in the supply chain before real benefit can be
seen on the trade side. Libraries have the advantage of being a closed
system but it would surely make sense for the major library suppliers of
RFID systems to work with BIC to ensure that we have a single standard and
that, in the future, libraries can take advantage of the RFID tags that will
be inserted in books as part of the production process.
