I presume Neil is too far north to be Elmetian and I wounder if
Saxo/Anglian occupation of the area is little more than a thin veneer of
"war lords" and retainers and If it were me I would stick with early
Medieval.
Foutunately sites of that era are not common in South Gloucestershire
but if they were I do have a date for the tranfer of power AD 577 after
which the Hwiccan period begins!

Dear All,
In response to Rob Bourne:
I've got a juicy metal detection site with finds ranging from early 5th to
Domesday. How do I characterise its "period" ? Sub-Roman, Anglian,
Migration period, Early Medieval, Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Scandinavian, etc
?? Can anyone tell me where the Anglians settled in North Yorks, and
where the Saxons lived ? How do we characterise villages that were
continuously occupied through various invasions but still maintained their
essential "British" lifestyle ?
Cheers, Neil

Dear Tim
I don't necessarily see why it is not possible to have more wide ranging
discussions than of late. I know that charging, access, etc. is important,
but it is extremely boring. My comment was slightly tongue in cheek
(after all, who really cares if I'm stressed or not?), but surely we have
more esoteric SMR related subjects to discuss and share, or interesting
interpretational and synthesis or GIS challenges and problems to air?

Rob,
I was under the impression that SMR Forum was for the discussion of
relevant
SMR matters such as access and charging policies, copyright, etc etc
rather
than being for the relief of stress.
Anyway, thankyou to everyone who took the time to give me their
thoughts on
charging and access to excavation reports
