I briefly discussed this project with George recently. You may like to know
that ALGAO has been trying to obtain money to set up and analyse a database
of archaeology planning and conservation casework - covering strategic
planning, dev control, agri-env schemes etc.
There might be some scope for some collaboration here??

Subject: Conservation Databases
CBA CONSERVATION DATABASE
For several years the CBA has maintained a Conservation Database of
information about listed historic buildings for which demolition or
substantial alteration is proposed. These cases are notified to the CBA, and
to the other four national amenity societies, for their comments and advice,
as required by the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act.
Last year the CBA received details for over four and a half thousand
applications for listed building consent.
With assistance from the Heritage Grant Fund, a project is underway
to review the potential for development of the CBA's Conservation Database
in the future. The study is looking first at the current use and possible
enhancement of the Database for the CBA's day-to-day conservation casework.
The second stage will include an investigation of the scope for developing
the Database more strategically. Could it provide a national information
resource for the wider conservation community, an aid to monitoring patterns
of change and targeting of resources in the historic built environment? Is
there the basis here for developing indicators for conservation performance
and sustainable development?
The study is being carried out by Gill Chitty in conjunction with
CBA staff. A number of local authority archaeology and conservation services
are being approached for their co-operation in assessing the quality of the
information in the Database. It would also be of particular interest to
hear from SMRs in authorities who are actively looking at developing
performance indicators and sustainability indicators - perhaps in the
context of the Best Value exercise or Green Audits - for the built historic
environment, or indeed historic environment conservation in general. Please
contact Gill for further information and with any useful feedback.
