Africa and Europe:
Myths, Masks and Masquerades
2-5 April 2001
An international interdisciplinary conference will be held at the
University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg from Monday 2 to
Thursday 5 April 2001. The theme of the Congress, "Africa and
Europe: Myths, Masks and Masquerades", aims to attract scholars
from a wide range of disciplines.
Proposals are invited for papers addressing the conference theme
and related areas.
This conference seeks to address some of the following questions:
- How do Europeans perceive and represent African culture(s)?
- How do Africans perceive and represent the "idea of Europe"?
- What shifts have occurred in these perceptions in the later half of
20th Century?
- What impact have new technologies had on these perceptions and
representations?
- How, has de-colonialisation and the African Renaissance affected
African-European relations?
- What are the future outlooks?
Contributions are welcome from the fields of:
- Literature
- Culture Studies
- Drama
- Film
- Visual Arts
- Language Studies
- Media
The Congress will be held back to back with the biennial the
Conference of Association for German Studies in Southern Africa
(SAGV) from Thursday 29 March to Saturday 31 March 2001. This
offers a unique opportunity for scholars interested in both
Conferences to participate in 2 exciting events.
Papers should not exceed 20 minutes. Those wishing to present
papers at the Congress are invited to send a provisional title and a
brief synopsis (250 words) not later than 30 June 2000. Please
include a cover page with the following information:
author's name(s) and affiliation(s)
mailing address
e-mail address
title of presentation
three to five key words
Your paper will be scheduled in an appropriate session. Acceptance
of your paper for presentation implies a commitment to register and
attend the conference. Papers will not be read if the presenter is
unable to attend.
