Dear All,
Greetings from Al-Ain, the oasis city of the Middle East. While compiling
this month's JSCAN, our monthly professional news letter I came across the
new seris - SOAP in the Archives of familiy medicine. I though if some of
you have not seen it yet, you may be interested in it. This is what the
editors have to say about SOAP.
"We are happy to provide a new series, Solutions to Often-Asked Problems
(SOAP). In this series, we start with questions that have arisen in the
day-to-day practice of family medicine but are not easily answered from
standard textbooks. Select authors will search the literature and formulate
succinct practical answers. The discussions will be as evidence based as
possible but will also give experience-based opinions when necessary to
provide clear applicable answers. Each SOAP will be arranged in a standard
Question, Search Strategy, Details, and Bottom Line format".
It is encouraging that more and more Editors are taking the EBM path. (this
is me!)For example the Evidence based case report in the BMJ. Has any one
got a list all the EBM related series in the different journals? Probably in
a year's time someone might attempt an audit of SOAP.
The two questions that have beed addressed so far are:
1) Are antibiotics related to oral combination contraceptive failures?
2) Is hypertriglyceridemia an independent risk factor for coronary heart
disease (CHD), and should it be treated?
Full text answers to these questions can be accessed online @

I found them quite useful and am planning to use the same in my next
teaching session on EBM. I confess that I have no financial interests in the
Archives of family medicine!!!!
May I take this opportunity to send my hearty EID greetings to all the
members of ISLAMIC faith on this list. Here the government just declated 6
days of national holidays starting from tomorrow for EID.
Cheers and warm regards,
Badri
