University Lectureship or Assistant University Lectureship
Applications are invited for a Lectureship or Assistant Lectureship
specialising in the Sociology of Marriage, the Family and Sexualities. The
successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching for the Social and
Political Sciences Tripos and to base his or her research in the Centre for
Family Research. The appointment can be taken up on or before 1 September
2000, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The Faculty of the Social and Political Sciences is an interdisciplinary
Faculty with teaching and research in politics, psychology and sociology.
The Centre for Family Research is a multi-disciplinary research group
founded some 30 years ago. Its Director is Professor Martin Richards. The
Centre has an international reputation for its research. It is part of the
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences which includes social and
developmental psychology, sociology and politics as well as
interdisciplinary work. The research work of the Centre is organised in
four clusters: socio-legal studies of the family, childhood and youth,
psycho-social aspects of the new human genetics and maternity services.

The essential qualifications for the post are:
· Degree and postgraduate qualification in sociology or a related social
science discipline with a strong interest in research and teaching on the
family, marriage and gender roles.
· A track record for published family research of international standing.
· Good teaching, research and communication (including written, verbal and
IT) skills.
· Good interpersonal and team working skills.
In the case of appointment to a Lectureship
· Skill and experience of research management.
· Ability to initiate new ideas, motivate others and to act flexibly and
sensitively to the needs of others.
· Knowledge of the social science research environment and research funding
arrangements.
The main duties of the post-holder will be as follows:
a) Research: The post-holder will actively pursue his/her own research on
the family in the Centre.
b) Teaching: The post-holder will be expected to contribute to
undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Faculty, especially in
the areas related to family and domestic life and on research methods.
This may take the form of lectures, seminars and classes as well as
individual supervision of graduate students and undergraduates undertaking
research projects. The post-holder may undertake a limited amount of
college teaching. This is a collegiate responsibility and is paid for by
the college. The successful candidate would be eligible for appointment to
a college fellowship.
c) University Assistant Lecturers carry smaller teaching and administrative
loads than University Lecturers. Both Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers
are eligible for promotion through the University's scheme to a personal
Readership or Professorship. The University has generous provision for
sabbatical leave.
Appointments made at University Lecturer level will be for three or five
years in the first instance, with the possibility of reappointment to the
retiring age. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Lecturer
is £20,811 a year, rising by eleven annual increments to £32,095.
Appointments made at University Assistant Lecturer level will be for three
years with the possibility of reappointment for a further two years. The
statutory limit of tenure of a University Assistant lectureship is five
years, but all holders of the office of University Assistant Lecturer are
considered for possible appointment to the office of University Lecturer
during the course of their tenure. The pensionable scale of stipends for a
University Assistant Lecturer is £17,238 a year, rising by six annual
increments to £22,579.

candidates for the University Lectureship, the University Assistant

will be asked to submit samples of their published work. Interviews will
take place on Tuesday 23 May 2000 and it is intended to invite each
shortlisted candidate to meet members of the Faculty and to give a
presentation on the day before the formal interview.
