Barbie can help understand the social model,
I put another slant on the Barbie connection
Amusing but useful
in 1997 the company made Becky, a Barbie companion, who happens to be
a wheelchair user.
However, this enlightened move was not shared across the company
since they failed to communicate with Barbie house design and
manufactures. Needless to say Becky was made homeless, disabled by
her environment!
I made use of this at a rehab nurses conference a few years ago and
included it in the associated article as follows
Scullion P (1999) Challenging discrimination against disabled
patients. Nursing Standard. (13 18) 37-40.
If anyone knows how to obtain a Becky Barbie doll, id like one as a
teaching aid, I asked in 'toys r us' and they must think i am odd!
