LECTURING VACANCIES (PROFESSOR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, SENIOR LECTURER, LECTURER,

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA 
PRETORIA MAIN CAMPUS

The University of South Africa is a distance teaching university and the largest 
university in Southern Africa. The Department of Computer Science and 
Information Systems is a dynamic department offering both Computer Science and 
Information Systems as majors in three Faculties: Science, Economic and 
Management Sciences, and Arts. Teaching is offered on B-degree, honours, 
masters, and doctoral level. The Department also actively promotes research in a 
variety of fields.

Applications for positions of Junior Lecturer up to Professor are invited from 
candidates with qualifications in Computer Science, Information Systems, or 
closely related fields, and must reach the Head, Personnel Department, on the 
prescribed form ccompanied by a full CV.  Clearly  indicate the reference 
number. Unisa reserves the right not to make an appointment.

Minimum requirements are as follows:

Qualifications: In exceptional cases, as dictated by the operational needs of  
the Department and the availability of suitable candidates, additional factors 
such as other relevant qualifications and/or experience may be considered. 

Professor: Doctorate, publications in recognised subject-related journals and 
peer-reviewed conference proceedings, significant teaching experience including 
supervision of Masters and/or Doctoral students or equivalent research and 
development experience, general leadership and management ability at a senior 
level. Specific research experience: Software engineering or computer networks. 

Associate Professor: Doctorate, publications in recognised subject-related 
journals and /or peer-reviewed conference proceedings, either suitable teaching 
experience and the ability to supervise post-graduate research students or 
substantial experience in a relevant application area, and leadership ability at 
departmental and faculty levels. Specific research experience: Software 
engineering, human-computer interaction, or computer networks.

Senior Lecturer: Doctorate, or Masters degree and publications in recognised 
subject-related journals or peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and 
significant teaching experience or experience in a relevant application area.

Lecturer: Masters degree and an above average study record, or a honours degree 
and an above average study record, and substantial teaching experience or 
substantial experience in a relevant application area.

Junior Lecturer: Honours degree and an above average study record. 

Additional recommendations include:
- A commitment towards further studies (for candidates without a Masters or 
Doctoral degree) and research in one of the research areas listed below.
- Teaching or industry experience in the one or more of the teaching areas 
listed below.
In particular for more senior positions: 
- Excellent practical skills and/or industry experience. 
- A willingness to adapt to emerging information technologies.

Research Areas:
Software Engineering (including Object-Orientated Technology and Development); 
Electronic Education Technologies and Strategies including Computer-Aided 
Instruction; Computer Networks; Human-Computer Interaction; Formal Aspects of  
Computer Science (including Knowledge Representation and Reasoning).

Teaching Areas:
All areas of Computer Science and Information Systems that fall within our 
curriculum with special emphasis on Software Engineering, Information Systems, 
Computer Networks, Human-Computer Interaction, and Object-Oriented Technologies.

The level of appointment will be commensurate with academic qualifications, 
depth of industry experience, and strength of research and publications.  
Teaching experience must be at the higher education level, and publications must 
be recent (last five years). 

Duties: 
Successful candidates will, in a team environment, participate in teaching which 
includes the compilation of study material and examination papers, marking of 
assignments and examination scripts, conducting workshops for practical work, 
and actively engage in research.  Other duties could include contributing to the 
Department's management and administration, and community service.  In the case 
of professors and associate professors, and to a lesser extent senior lecturers, 
candidates will be expected to  provide study guidance to Masters and Doctoral 
students.

This advertisement will stay valid until all vacancies have been filled, else 
until 30 September 2000. A shortlisting committee will consider applications 
received at two monthly intervals starting 31 March 2000.
