INSTITUTE OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY
RESEARCH FELLOW POSTS FOR THE PEARL PROJECT
Instructional Design/Evaluation
Human Computer Interaction in Educational Software
We are seeking two research fellows to become part of the team for a major
EU funded project PEARL (Practical Experimentation by Accessible Remote
Learning). This innovative project will research and develop a system that
enables students to conduct real-world experiments remotely from a personal
computer. The objective is to provide high quality learning experiences in
science and engineering by using the Internet (or local intranets) to bring
the teaching laboratory to students, giving flexibility in terms of time,
location, access to expensive equipment. Particular attention is being paid
to the needs of students with disabilities, since they are under
represented in science and engineering subjects. The project will greatly
enhance the scope of Internet courses by enabling students to work
collaboratively on remote experiments. The Open University is the
co-ordinator of this £ 1.1 million project, which also involves partners
from Scotland, Ireland, Portugal and Greece.

- to implement the proposed educational software framework that enables
tutors to readily construct pedagogically sound teaching experiments on the
PEARL system.

equivalent in science, computer science, engineering, psychology or other
appropriate discipline and have demonstrable research and development
experience including software development. Good team working,
