Call for Papers for HICSS Mini-track on
Waiting for the Web

**********************************************
This Mini-track is part of the
Emerging Technology Track of HICSS-34
(Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences)
Maui, Hawaii, 3-6 January 2001
Bringing HCI and Web technologies together
------------------------------------------
The WWW is the most extensive interactive system ever developed. Its
primary function is now no longer as a large scale information
resource, but it has become an essential tool in the provision of
global commercial, educational and leisure services. The uptake of
these services is reliant on the response times and pace matching
users' requirements and expectations.
In order to evaluate the role of time in WWW interactions, we need to
consider HCI aspects of WWW usage and the range of web software
technologies. This examination provides a basis for developing WWW
performance engineering strategies.
How can system designers ensure that WWW resources are configured and
managed to meet users needs? It is the aim of this mini-track to
provide a forum for researchers with an interest in HCI and web
performance engineering to investigate the role that time plays in the
usage and functionality of the WWW. We believe that this will prove an
exciting opportunity for software technologists, human factors experts
and commercial developers to share their expertise.
Topics
We encourage the submission of papers that focus on temporal issues
within areas such as:
* empirical studies of WWW usage
* usability issues within WWW design
* temporal aspects of human interaction
* multimedia and continuous media
* methods and tools for WWW development
* web application design
* case studies of web site development and usage
* transaction management and e-commerce
* configuration of web servers
* scalability and load balancing issues
* performance evaluation of WWW applications
* role of search engines
* protocols and middleware
* service provision
Paper Submission
Full papers of not more than 5000 words should be submitted in
electronic format to the mini-track co-ordinators by 1 June. Detailed
Instructions for Authors are available on the mini-track web site:
http://homepages.shu.ac.uk/=7Ecmsiej/hicss/
Papers must not have been previously presented or published, nor
currently submitted for journal publication. Each manuscript will be
subjected to a rigorous refereeing process. Accepted papers will be
published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
Important Dates
* Submission of papers by 1 June
* Notification of accepted papers by 31 August
* Camera-ready copies of accepted manuscripts are due by 1 October
We encourage you to submit a 300 word abstract - this will enable us
to provide feedback on whether your proposed paper is within the scope
of this mini-track. The abstract does not form part of the formal
refereeing process, and is not compulsory. Abstract to co-ordinators
in text format by 14 April. We shall provide feedback on your abstract
by 30 April.
