Whatever the wrongs and wrongs of introducing a new grade - Junior Consultant or
Specialist - I don't think it is true to say that it would cost more to pay new
consultants than to pay senior registrars.
If junior doctors accept the new pay offer then Specialist Registrars (and any
remaining Senior Registrars) could earn more than newly appointed Consultants!
If working significant antisocial hours (but still withint he New Deal) a top of
the scale SpR would earn GBP 52620 this December, GBP56182 in Dec 2001 and GBP
63144 in Dec 2002.
Compare this with a Consultant scale going from 48905 to 63640 at present.
Just a thought.
