Self access learning is a lifelong process in our experience both here in Ulster and within the
SMILE ( Strategies for Managing an Independent Learning Environment )Project.
Currently in connection with the work of the Open Learning Adviser within SMILE, we are faced
with dealing with many students who are now advanced in terms of their studies, but who have
never learnt to work on their own and for themselves. They do their assignments but do nothing
to tackle their evident deficiencies in whatever area on their own.
Since all language classes have been forced to cut actual teaching contact hours recently, the
lack of student learning skills is becoming - embarrassingly - obvious.
Eventually, as the seethe present first years go through, we may find that they need less
support in year 3 or 4 but we are not that far yet!
Please respond and " Give us your mustard'!
Mike
