Hi Rachel - we're about to publish in the latest edition of SportEX Medicine
journal an extensive piece on leg and related ankle injuries to tie in with
the London Marathon. There is a three page piece on biomechanics and
biomechanical causes of injury followed by a differential diagnosis of lower
limb (shin) pain which includes chronic compartment syndrome, medial tibial
stress syndrome and stress fractures - shin splints is a general terms which
can cover a multitude of sins! There then follows a specific management and
rehabilitation article which includes the use of eccentric exercises,
stretches and ice. There is also a patient rehabilitation programme which
can be photocopied. The articles are about to go to the printers and will be
due out in just over a week(just in case any of you SportEX subscribers were
wondering!). If I can be of any further help please get in touch - the
articles have been written by two sports medicine specialists at the Royal
London Hospital - one is a podiatrist with a special interest in
running/sports medicine and the other is a pretty well known physiotherapist
who lectures on this topic.
