"...every country in Europe, except
Spain, is socialist. All of Europe has high taxes
and burdensome regulations, and Great Britain
is the only outpost of liberty in the EU. Britain’s
greatest gift to the world, however, may be the
rule of law. A nation cannot have liberty without it."
The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Margaret Thatcher, 1999

-------------
"The future is not what it used to be," Thatcher began. She seized upon
U.S. Circuit Judge Damon J. Keith, who received an honorary law
degree, as a token representative of "the majesty of the law. You can't
have liberty without the rule of law: otherwise it is only the freedom of
the strong to oppress the weak."
One of the free world's most important and difficult tasks, Thatcher said,
is "teaching" the Russians and other recently-freed peoples about the
nature, and function, of a common law kept by an independent judiciary,
for "they know not of that."

-----------
THE MOST DISTURBING THREAT to our freedom and security is
the growing disrespect for the rule of law. In government as in
opposition, Labour have undermined it. Yet respect for the rule of
law is the basis of a free and civilised life. We will restore it,
re-establishing the supremacy of Parliament and giving the right
priority to the fight against crime.
Conservative Manifesto 1979
-----------
and some extra wisdom from the Rt Hon William Hague MP,
Leader of the Conservative Party...
The central features of the British constitution - limited and democratically
accountable government, the rule of law and the unity of the kingdom -
provide us
with one of those important conditions of freedom.
...we recognise that our country's constitutional arrangements protect our
freedoms precisely because they embody our history, traditions and identity
as a
people - what you might call our unique Britishness.
