Protocol - no.
Other than the vague protocol of 'follow ABC with care of C-spine ' which
really doesn't help.
In my experiance those who are dead are left hanging and then c-cpine comes
secondary to cutting them down and defib/ETT. Those who are found alive are
usually cut down before we get there and the question doesn't arise.
Maybe that is the answer, we don't have a protocol because it is rare to
come across someone who is hanging and still alive on our arrival.

Subject: Attempted Hanging
Dear All,
Can anyone of a pre-hospital / immediate care persuasion tell me what the
role of C-Spine precautions in treating an attempted hanging - specifically
in trying to "get them down" in the first place?
A friend of mine has to give a presentation on the subject and asked me for
advice, but I have no experience outside hospitals. I would have thought
that protecting the C-Spine would be part of any "protocol", but there is an
obvious urge to get people down fast to start CPR if necessary.
Is there an "approved method" of cutting down hanging victims that affords
some C-Spine protection?
Thanks
Jonathan Bury
