Can I clarify the Journal index entries for 1946 & 1953.
April 1946 (No 077) Page 16: 'Keep ye the law' by James McG. Stewart
is indexed under Canada. Canadian Engineers' initiation rite...
There was apparently no correspondence follow-up
July 1946 (No 078) Page 13: 'Kipling and the Engineers' by R.M. Harvey
is indexed under Engineers. Kipling and the Engineers. Part 1
and there were correspondence follow ups at 079/16 & 081/14.
Parts 2 & 3 followed at 079/09 & 080/10
July 1953 (No 106) Page 16 is a letter with the heading 'Kipling in Canada'
and is indexed under Canada. Kipling and the Ritual relating to the
calling of a professional engineer.
It relates to a letter sent to J.H.C. Brooking by J. McG. Stewart, the
author of the April 1946 article and refers in passing to Cold Iron,
Breaking Strain, Sons of Martha, Astrologers' Song & Wage Slaves. There
was apparently no further correspondence.
All the above comments derive from the journals themselves, but I would be
delighted to alter incorrect entries in the index.
Jeffery's letter in March 1994 requests the text of the Canadian Society of
Engineers' rite. Stewart's article (077/16) says:
'There can be little doubt that the preparation of the Ritual was in
turn the inspiration for one of Kipling's last poems, the "Hymn of
the Breaking Strain" - (Daily Mail; The Engineer May 15th, 1935),
published less than a year before his death. It is included in
Verse Definitive Edition.
The text of the Obligation is as follows...' (and the text follows).
The journal index is now complete 1927 - 1999 in 2 versions:
1. MAIN. This indexes titles, subjects, headings, etc
2. NAME. This indexes authors, speakers, name sources, etc
A printed copy is currently with Mike Smith, the Society Secretary to whom all
enquiries should be addressed.
An electronic copy has been sent to John Radcliffe for conversion from RISC
format for the internet. It should be online shortly.
Best wishes to all
John Morgan
