If you aren't locating them hierarchically, when you make the nodes,
drop them into the Free Nodes area, and click Free Nodes when you want to
code - you'll see the name of the node in the slot.
N4 offers you the address only if you are locating a node in a tree,
since in that case the location probably mattered to you. The address of
course can put in a lot more location information - values/about
family/ideas of good family/closeness is a lot harder to fit in a slot than
(7 1 2 1). But the use of trees is only for those wanting to order their
categories in a catalog, to review and consistently find them. If you don't
want this, you may never want to place nodes in the trees - just use free
nodes all the time. If you do, you'll likely find the address tells you
both what the node is and where it is, once you get going.
(It's an interesting methods issue:for some but not all researchers,
the location of a category is as important as its name. NVivo supports tree
structuring, of course, but presents the node always by title rather than by
its address - and many N4 users have regretted this.)
