In terms of influencing patients, I don't work with GBS patients but I
recently had the benefit of helping with one lady undergoing rehab at a
nearby unit.
The thing that stuck out most to me was the motivating influence of the
physio, which is something I think we're all good at. The patient was very
weepy and depressed and would talk the hind legs off a donkey to delay
trying a stand or doing any exercises. The physio persisted and "took no
nonsense" (in a nice kind of way!). She kept emphasising that she WOULD get
better (than current status) and really pushed her emotionally and
physically (appropriate to her stage of recovery, ability and with
appropriate rest of course). The lady is now walking with a ZF and has
reasonably recovery of the hands. I think we do a lot psychologically in
terms of recovery never mind physically.
