Dear List;
I am a physiotherapist who has just started working in the field of
pediatrics, and children with congenital heart disease is a substantial
group of patients where I work.
So far I have been introduced to quite good protocols and standards
regarding pre-operative and post-operative chest physiotherapy to this
patient group. However, I have also been introduced to some ideas suggesting
that some of these children have delayed motor development. Well aware of
the physical limitations often asociated with this group, I cannot find any
literature supporting the idea that they have any significant motor delays.
I would be very grateful if anyone have information about the motor
development of this group, and if they are delayed, for how long?
Is it a lasting problem? Does it require physiotherapy intervention.
I would also appreciate any response from other physiotherapists working
with children with congenital heart disease, to hear what roles other
physiotherapists have ith regards to this group, and to share experiences.
Thank you in advance
T. Andersen
