Hiya,
Im not sure if the pub you're refereing to is the one I know. Its the
Saltersgate just outside Whitby on the Pickering Road, about half a mile from
Fylingdales RAF site.
The story goes that an excise man was travelling to Whitby and stayed at
the inn, (due to the fog that can quickly come in from the Hole of Horcum, it
can be very thick and very quick). The landlord was the head of a band of
smuugglers. They decided to get rid of the man, burying him under the hearth
and the superstition goes that they must keep the fire going unless the
excise man will come back and haunt the landlord and the pub.
Well thats the gist of it anyway. It is well documented and will probably
appear in Whitby tourist and history books.
Erm , not to put pay to the story, but the fire has gone out on numerous
occassions. (But I expect its always quickly re-kindled)
Regards
Sara Donaldson
