Well,
This Bricklayers Arms At Hoxton has brought some useful responses to us
hasn't it.
We sorted out the Canal information, and sure enough at the top of the map
near the Islington Tunnel is New North Road - no mention of the pub though!
But it also says in the booklet (Canal Walks in London) produced by the
British Waterways - that the Islington tunnel is 960 yards long and used
to be 'legged through' by the bargees, but that in 1826 a steam tug was
introduced which was in use until the 1930's, so maybe they had a wharf
connected with that steam tug?
Thanks to Stuart for taking the trouble to look up the directories for us,
it makes us quite green with envy knowing what is available to you over
there...sigh... never mind, at least with mailing lists like this we can
connect with like-minded people.
