Dear Eunice & Ron
When I got home last night I checked in my own two London directories
(issued by The Post Office) for 1836 & 1839. There is no entry for
Alexander Thornton in 1836 but there is an entry for 1839. So it looks as
if he started in 1837.
I went back to the Library this lunch hour and found a map for 1839 which I
have photocopied and if you can send your address I will forward it to you.
Alas I cannot find Stephens Place or Upper Dorchester Place. Sometimes pubs
are written on these maps and again I cannot find the Bricklayers Arms
although north of the Regents canal there is a Bricklayers Alms House but
not a pub in sight near by.
I also looked up the name Dudley (John) and there is one listed in 1839 as
a chairmaker at 4 Prospect Place, Kingsland. which is just north of Hoxton
above the Regents Canal. So was he buying furniture for the pub? Its
anybodies guess! This was in Pigot's directory. Believe it or not there are
two Prospect Places on the map of 1839. The furniture business was fairly
wide spread in this area.
I have difficulty downloading some documents but a copy would be
interesting, I will enclose my home address with the maps I send.
Cheers for now
Stuart.
