The Institute for Learning and Research Technology (ILRT) has vacancies for:
* Technical Researcher (Web Search Environments) Ref: 6182
* Technical Researcher (Semantic Web applications developer) Ref:6183
* Unix Systems Administrator Ref:6184
1 year contract in the first instance
The ILRT, at the University of Bristol, is the largest group of its
kind in the UK, with a variety of large-scale Internet-based services
and projects. It is an informal, hectic and friendly place to work
and staff are supported and encouraged to learn new skills and
progress rapidly. We are looking to recruit 3 new staff:
Two Technical Researchers, one (Ref: 6182) to work on rapid
prototypes which combine the advantages of search engines and
"portals" with high quality human-created descriptions and
classification, the second (Ref: 6183) to carry out R&D in support of
the Institute's work on software, services and standards based around
the W3C's Semantic Web technology roadmap.
Unix System Administrator (Ref: 6184) - we need someone with a
comprehensive knowledge of UNIX systems administration including
management of large-scale Web services. Perl and shell programming
(including CGI) also essential. Key tasks include maintaining
UNIX-based services and software and providing technical support and
development for a number of digital library and Web-search projects.
With all three posts it will be necessary to develop new skills in
areas such as Internet/Web standards, metadata, Web/database
connectivity, XML and RDF. The posts will also involve some software
development (primarily in a Perl / Java / Web / Unix environment),
focussing on Internet standards-based search systems (eg using XML,
RDF, CORBA, SQL, Z39.50).
Applications
Applicants may apply for more than one position in the same
application. Please apply in writing with CV and covering letter
including the names and addresses of two referees to The Personnel
Office (EO), University of Bristol, Senate House, Bristol, BS8 1TH,

The closing date for applications is 2 March 2000, interviews will
