Call for Proposals
Graduate Workshop on National Identity and Public Policy in
Comparative Perspective
We are inviting proposals for participation in an interdisciplinary
weekend-long graduate student workshop on identity formation and
public policy. The workshop will provide an opportunity for
intensive exchange among graduate students and a select group
of faculty mentors from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds in the
social sciences, regional studies, and modern history. Much recent
academic attention has focused on nationalist movements. Instead
this workshop will examine the interaction between ethnic, national
and supranational identities and public policy. All proposals should
therefore address a contemporary issue related to the link
between identity formation and the state as an actor, and should
have a clear policy dimension.
The conference will take place on the campus of Princeton
University beginning on Friday afternoon, Sept. 30 through Sunday,
Oct. 1. All participants will present their work in small group
sessions which will be organized thematically. Accommodations
will be provided and transportation costs reimbursed up to a
maximum of $200 for North American travel and - pending funding -
up to $300 for intercontinental travel.
Participants should be doctoral candidates and have completed
some portion of fieldwork by the time of the workshop. Projects
limited to research on the United States and projects which do not
involve fieldwork cannot be considered. Participants will be
expected to submit, by September 1, a written basis for
substantive discussion. This may consist of anything from initial
conceptualizations of field observations to a polished dissertation
chapter. Since participants are required to thoroughly review a
subset of other written submissions prior to the workshop, these
submissions should be limited to 35 double-spaced pages.
Proposals up to 1,000 words are due by May 15, 2000. More
information and a cover sheet for submissions are available at
http://www.princeton.edu/~policyid
PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT
BE INTERESTED IN THE WORKSHOP. *****
