Hi All
There has been a booklet called "Media Guidelines" produced by a the
Disability Council of New South Wales (Australia) about how to report on
disability issues which takes up language use in the media. Its a quasi
style guide. It also includes a listing of other media guideline
references.
Even tho' the booklet is early-mid 90's (no publishing date extant) it
reflects the use of Australian vernacular. In view of postings to this list
on the relative merits of using the terms 'disabled people' versus 'people
with a disability', I'd ask for some cross-cultural leniency!
I shall send you an original (if I can find one), or a copy to the address
you've given. Other people wanting a copy can contact me off-list and I
shall similarly send on.
Regards,
Lisa Sampson

Subject: U.S. reporting on disability / language / issues etc.
Hello everyone,
Over this past year, i've been working on starting a non-profit called
Disability Media Project (dmedia) to address the fair and accurate
reporting of disability issues. We're still defining ourselves but also
have goal by mid june to produce a booklet/brochure on reporting issues and
disability. it's possible i might have the opportunity to work with one or
two local journalism students on this project over the next 3 months. The
first step is to identify what is already out there --
So, I'm asking you for ANY contacts, info, paper, leads, etc. about
anything that has been done before on reporting on disability -- this
includes language (do/don't) style guides, tips, etc. This can be from the
disability or journalism communities.
I do have The Disability Messenger - which was put out by the presidents
committee on employment of people w/disabilities for the Unity 99
conference.
Also, if any of you have something similar from another "under-represented"
issue or group that is good or bad (and why) this too would be helpful.
After collecting what is "already done" we'll go through a process of
deciding the best course of action and then put it back out to the
disability and journalism communities for feedback. (we expect a lot!) Of
course when the booklet is done it will be posted on the web and made
available in other formats.
Thanks for all your help!
Suzanne Levine
