Hi
Just to respond to recent postings about 'replies':
Yes, I did return the reply settings to 'reply-to-sender' to cut down on
a spate of personal and irrelevant mail going to the list (and the
impossibly large number of error messages that generated). Thanks
for pointing that out. I had forgotten, and I have now returned the
settings so that replies are sent to the whole list by default.
So, as usual, please think very carefully before hitting the send
button and please make sure that you have addressed your message
correctly. We'll see how it goes.
As for abusive and personal comments (on or off list), I can only say
that I would really discourage this. Unlike many 'public' lists,
mailbase acadeic discussion lists are not an entirely 'free space'
(partly because of the way they are funded). Flaming and spamming
are definitely off-limits, and we have guidelines on anti-oppressive
practice. So, if anyone does have a complaint about personal abuse,
I am happy to try and mediate on or off list (not that anyone would
necessarily take any notice).
Just as in the non-silicon world, public debates do get dominated by
abusive people from time to time, and we need to challenge that by
creating enabling environments. However, it's also worth maintaining
a sense of perspective. Memories and hard feelings tend not to be
very long-lived in cyberspace.
Best wishes
Your friendly list administrator.
