My apologies for cross-posting of this. Please draw the
following notice to the attention of potential interested
candidates.
Applications are invited for two ESRC CASE studentships in
the Institute for the Geography of Health, University of Portsmouth.
(for further details of ths research group, see our website at
http://www.envf.port.ac.uk/geo/research/health/index.htm).
These are collaborative awards for research leading to a PhD on
projects linked to the interests of the NHS's National Casemix Office
and the Hampshire Ambulance Trust (both organisations are located in
Winchester) respectively. They will be supervised by John Mohan and
Graham Moon (University of Portsmouth) and staff of the respective
organisations.
Outline project descriptions are as follows:
1. the project with the Hampshire Ambulance Trust will investigate,
through a mix of extensive and intensive techniques, variations in the
reasons for and rationale underpinning variations in training policies
across ambulance authorities in the South East Regional Office of the
NHS with a view to understanding of the extent to which common
approaches to training needs can be devised given local variations in
the workload and organisation environment of ambulance trusts.
2. the studentship with the National Casemix office (NCMO) will
provide an up-to-date analysis of spatial variations in health service
utilisation by using the NCMO's data on Health Benefit Groups (HBGs)
and Health Resource Groups (HRGs). To date no extensive statistical
analyses of geographical variations in these have been undertaken. The
project will specifically focus on variations in use of services
associated with coronary heart disease across England and Wales.
We would welcome applications from well-qualified graduates in the
social sciences. Candidates should have or expect to gain at least a
2.1 in a relevant discipline (Geography, sociology, social policy)
preferably with a strong element of health-related work, and possibly
a Master's qualification in a relevant area. As well as recent
graduates applications are also welcome from staff educated to degree
level working in the health sector and seeking to move in a research
direction. For the studentship with the NCMO a strong quantitative
background is essential; the work with the Hampshire Ambulance Trust
will be more qualitative in character involving documentary analyses,
questionnaires and interviews. Although located in a geography
department we have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary work and
staff and students have backgrounds in maths, history and social
policy as well as in geography.
The awards attract the standard ESRC allowance (currently £6620 p.a.)
and an additional £1375p.a. from the collaborating organisations. In
addition a supplement of £1510 is payable for students aged 26 or
over. The awards are for 2 years in the first instance with renewal
for a thrd year being subject to satisfactory progress. ESRC's normal
conditions of academic and residential eligibility apply (guidance
notes for applicants available at
http://www.esrc.ac.uk/ptd/comp/comp.htm).
Enquiries should be addressed to John Mohan in the first instance (tel
02392-842493; email [log in to unmask]; postal address Geography
Department, University of Portsmouth, Buckingham Building, Lion
Terrace, Portsmouth PO1 3HE). A formal advertisement will be placed
shortly; we anticipate a closing date of end-March / early April.
Nominations of successful candidates must be received by ESRC by 1st
July.
Thanks
John Mohan
