UNIVERSITY OF NORTHUMBRIA AT NEWCASTLE
INSTITUTE FOR IMAGE DATA RESEARCH
Research associate - Three year fixed term, renewable
(salary range: £19,040 - £24,011 per annum)
The Institute for Image Data Research is a multi-disciplinary
research centre within the University of Northumbria, which
brings together researchers from the fields of Computing,
Psychology, Library Management and Art History to investigate
the role of electronic images in human communication. Details
of the work of the Institute can be found on our website at
http://www.unn.ac.uk/iidr/.
Recent success in gaining funding from the Arts and Humanities
Research Board means that we are now looking for a researcher
to work on a three-year project concerned with developing a
user-centred visual query interface for image databases
The overall aim of the project is to identify the key elements
for a user-friendly search interface to image databases. Specific
tasks will include identifying the image features most salient
to users in constructing queries, developing prototype interfaces
which allow users to specify those features, evaluating those
interfaces, and producing guidelines for the development of
future systems.
You should be well qualified in psychology, human-factors or a
related discipline, preferably to masters level or have the
equivalent research experience. You should have knowledge of
usability assessment techniques and an understanding of user-
behaviour coupled with some programming skills. Preference will
be given to candidates who can demonstrate a specific knowledge
of image retrieval issues. You should also have good
interpersonal skills and the ability to write well.
If you are interested in this post, you are welcome to contact
the project head, Dr Pam Briggs (email: [log in to unmask],
telephone: 0191-227-4648) for an informal discussion before
applying. To apply, contact Recruitment Services, Personnel
Department, Room 001, Ellison Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne
