Well, its a matter of interpretation as one will say. Probably the best
place to start is
the Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy Vol. 76C which has the
proceedings from
a conference on Roman materials in Ireland. After that go to chapter 9 of
Raftery's
PAGAN CELTIC IRELAND for the additional discoveries and ideas since then.
I remeber when I was excavating in Kilkenny in 1988, there was a big
hub-bub about
the re-interpretation of a cremation burial with a Roman mirror, Samian
ware, and
a Roman glass jar. Somebody at the National Museum was saying this was
evidence of
a Roman trading colony; personally I don't think so.....
Just my two yen's worth on this Tuesday morning,
Mark Hall
>discussing roman settlements in mexico with a colleague today, he
mentioned that
>someone has found the remains of a roman trading settlement in ireland
somewhere
>- does anyone have references? is this thing for real?
> how about the romans on the canary islands, which some spaniard is
>supposed to have found evidence for...?
>
>yeah, it's boring out here, but...
