I hear the latest plan is to provide all the extra 4000 beds required in
one large supra-regional A&E hospital the size of Belgium, in the
midlands. Inefficient peripheral cottage hospitals like Eastbourne and
the Royal Sussex County (sorry Rowley, Carlos, John and Geoff) will
obviously be relocated to the new centre of excellence. Patients will be
given tax incentives to take out private medical helicopter transport
insurance in case they ever needed the services of the new monolithic
place. It makes perfect economic sense, and is of course fully supported
by the Royal Colleges and BAEM as it will increase the throughput of
teaching material (patients) for trainees ;-)
