My trawl for information about graphic images didn't yield much, but it did
lead me to Helix, the Higher Education Library Image Exchange, at
http://www.helix.dmu.ac.uk . Helix currently offers some 52,000 images on
the Social
and Political History of Britain 1859-present, for use by academics in
higher education without royalty. At present it only deals with a limited
number of categories of material, and they are currently preparing a bid to
extend their coverage. I put it to them that it they might consider
compiling a collection relating to the Welfare State, and received a
positive response from John Eyre at Helix, who tells me that although the
idea is too late for the next bidding round it should be possible to put in
a marker in the documents anticipating future development in this field. He
has asked me if I can put together a paragraph indicating "potential" user
group and usage interests by next Tuesday. Many of the potential users of
such a source are on this list, and I would be grateful for any comments or
material I could forward.
