Postgraduate Studentship Available for Research Degree
UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS
CENTRE for RESEARCH
on
FAMILY, KINSHIP & CHILDHOOD
Background
The Centre was formed in 1997 to bring together people across the
University of Leeds who are interested in research on issues
concerning family organisation and change, new forms of kinship
obligation, and all aspects of childhood in Britain at the end of the
twentieth century. Membership from within the University includes
researchers from sociology, social policy, psychology, education,
law medicine and health studies.
The Studentships
The University has allocated funds to the Centre to support one
research studentship in 2000/01. The studentship will be
supported to the same extent as a basic ESRC maintenance grant
and will include the same amount normally allowable for research
expenses. Fees will be paid by the department with whom the
student registers. It will be possible for students to carry out cross-
disciplinary work (for example a socio-legal project) or to do work
linked with one of our ongoing research projects.
Any areas relevant to the Centre’s work will be considered.
Application forms can be obtained from Debbie Westmoreland in
Sociology and Social Policy (Email: { HYPERLINK

will be given to candidates who have already completed a Masters
programme which includes research training in the social
sciences. We would also like candidates to apply to the ESRC
through this University if possible.
Deadline: Final deadline for studentship applications to the Centre
is 31 March 2000. The deadline for ESRC applications will be 1
May (although the internal university deadline is several weeks
before this) so students who wish to apply to both should send
their applications to the Postgraduate Secretary in the Department
of Sociology and Social Policy as soon as possible.
