CALL FOR PAPERS AND SESSIONS
The Organizing Committee is delighted to have the agreement 
of Edward Said, Joep Leerssen and Marianne McDonald to give 
plenary lectures at the conference IMAGE INTO IDENTITY, and 
now invites proposals for papers and sessions from any 
academic discipline which will fit the themes of the 
conference, as outlined below and overleaf. Proposals from 
art historians, historians, literature and film 
specialists, anthropologists, psychologists, and 
philosophers are particularly welcome. 

PROPOSALS for papers of 20 minutes, in the form of a title 
and 300-word abstract, should be should be sent by 1 March 
2000 to the Chair of the Organizing Committee (address 
below), from whom further information is also available. 
(Session proposals of three or more papers are also 
welcome.) Text in English, please.

THEMES OF THE CONFERENCE:
In addition to the plenary lectures, there will be parallel 
sessions organized within three strands, as follows: 

1. IDENTITY AT THE LIMITS
How will identities cross the limit between this century 
and the next? How has identity encouraged scholars to go 
beyond the limits of their respective fields? What is its 
contribution to interdisciplinarity? Does anything exist 
beyond the limits defined by identity? Is identity 
inescapable? Are identities limiting or liberating? 
Identity Ltd. Has identity become too institutionalized? 
What is its impact outside the limits of academic 
discourse? Has the concept identity reached the limit of 
its heuristic power? What, if anything, lies beyond the 
discourse of identity? 

2. IMAGE INTO IDENTITY
How does imagery, and especially the visual image, assist 
in the construction of identity? What is the role of the 
visual arts in identity construction? How does musical, 
dramatic, cinematographic, and literary imagery express and 
affect identity? How can power be transmitted through 
imagery (for example in iconography or cartography)? What 
is the role of patronage and commissioning? What is the 
relationship between gender and imagery, or between 
ethnicity and imagery, in identity construction? How does 
the photographic image contribute to identity? What is the 
imagery of national identity? Of continental identity? 

3. INTERCULTURAL CONNECTIONS
How period-specific are identities? Can yesterday's 
identity be relevant today? How can classical literature be 
made to reach today's audiences? How anachronistic is our 
agenda for studying the past? How do identities interact 
across regions, nations and continents? How do borders 
affect identity? What are the effects of pre-colonial, 
colonial, and post-colonial encounters in the construction 
of identity? How is identity formed and manifested within 
society at the personal and group level? How important are 
linguistic and religious differences for identity 
formation? How do allegiances to family, gender, class, 
race, generation, and region affect identity? 

The Organizing Committee expects to publish an edited 
selection of the papers presented.
