Free Modems from the MGC
London, 14 January 2000 -- The Museums & Galleries Commission (MGC) will
provide free modems to Registered museums as part of a new programme to
help museums make the most of the Internet.
Timothy Mason, Director of the MGC, commented: "Many
smaller museums have basic computer equipment and need support to begin
exploring the Internet. The MGC will supply Registered museums without
Internet access with free modems to enable them to make the most of the
wealth of opportunities available. This project is part of a major
initiative designed to raise the level of new technology in museums and
help enable them to play a full part in generating online museum content
for a range of initiatives such as the National Grid for Learning."
Free modems will be available to Registered museums
which do not currently have access to the Internet. They will be made
available through a voucher scheme operated by the Area Museum Councils
(AMCs). Museums will also receive details of free Internet service
providers and will be able to make use of a dedicated support line until
March 2000. To take advantage of the scheme museums should register for
a voucher by telephoning their local AMC. A full list of AMCs and their
