Information Studies - UCLA - Visiting Faculty Opportunities, 2000-2001
The Department of Information Studies of the Graduate School of Education &
Information Studies at UCLA seeks outstanding scholars/researchers to help
lead the field into the next century. We invite applications for visiting
faculty (any rank) starting July 1, 2000 (teaching duties begin September
2000). These positions are temporary, for up to one year. The successful
candidate will lead projects and engage in research and teaching in one or
more of the areas listed below.
The Department offers top-rated MLIS and Ph.D. programs, with a faculty of
16 and a student body of approximately 150 Master's and 30 Ph.D. students.
Department faculty recently have been recognized as among the most
productive and highly-cited in the field of information studies. The
Graduate School of Education & Information Studies is one of the top-ranked
schools in the U.S. and supports large graduate programs and
internationally-recognized research centers. Within the School, IS has
emerged as an innovative, interdisciplinary center for theory and research
in information studies, including information science, archival
informatics, new media, and information policy.
The School and the Department have strong commitments to the rich and
varied multi cultural communities of the Southern California region, and a
reputation for merging research and practice in statewide, national, and
international outreach and service. We seek scholars who will make the most
of Los Angeles' unique advantages as a setting for research linking
information studies to public engagement and for creating international
connections, especially with the Pacific Rim and Latin America. The
Department has initiated a number of innovative new partnerships for
research and graduate education, including projects with government and
corporate organizations.
Candidates with one or more of the following specialties are especially
encouraged to apply: Information systems: knowledge organization,
information retrieval system theory and design, legal or health
informatics, indexing/subject access in electronic systems, instructional
media design. Information seeking: psychology of reading, literacy.
Digital libraries and digital archives: design, policy, archival theory
and practice, multimedia, visual resources. Policy: Information issues in
urban, multi cultural environments; leadership and advocacy; international
information policy issues, especially Pacific Rim; innovative approaches to
school library policy and practice. Social informatics: social context of
information technology; transformation of information institutions.
Qualifications include an earned doctorate, a demonstrated record of
research, publication, and grantsmanship, and established teaching
competence and experience. UCLA has an attractive salary and benefits
package.
