Presentation
The growing complexity of advanced societies, where production, management and
transmission of information and knowledge form a vital foundation, involves
important challenges in university teaching and carrying out research in
Information Science and Special Libraries.
Traditionally, Information and Special Libraries have dealt with effective ways
of representing, retrieving and publishing knowledge in order to help scientific
progress in the world.
The main objective of this British/Spanish Information Science Meeting is to
provide a setting for communication, collaboration, and interchange of
experiencies in teaching and research on Information Science and Special
Libraries between Spain and the United Kingdom.
This meeting aims to establish a permanent plattform for British and Spanish
university teachers who are highly qualified in research and teaching.
Our objective is to bring together British and Spanish deans and professors of
the university faculty of Information Science, Heads of Information Science
Sections of other university Departments and all teachers of this discipline who
want to take part in the meeting.
Principal Meeting Topics
. Analysis and discussion of new pedagogical teaching methods that could help to
improve classroom quality of teaching of Information Science and Special
Libraries
. Analysis of strategies to develop research projects and possibilities of
obtaining resources and financial help from the European Community, as well as
analysis of research projects that could be developed by teachers of the two
countries
. Presentation of research projects from Spain and the United Kingdom that could
involve a challenge for Information Science
. Analysis and discussion of the objectives, methodologies, and subjects that
future Information Science professionals will require to adapt to the fast
changing environment of the Information Society
. Analysis of strategies for making society aware of the role of Information
Science professionals
. Analysis and discussion of the possibility of designing and creating a
thematic network between the two countries, that would facilitate the
communication, collaboration and interchange of ideas and experiences in
teaching and research on Informatio Science and Special Libraries.

Digital Meeting
Through the preliminaries to and during the "1st British/Spanish Information
Science Teachers' Meeting", the "1st Digital British/Spanish Information Sciende
Teachers' Meeting" will be developed.
Since is not foreseen that participants will be able to present papers during
the meeting, we offer a virtual space to be the site of the "1st Digital
British/Spanish Information Science Teachers' Meeting". Its principal objective
will be to provide a virtual framework for communication between Information
Science Teachers from United Kingdom and Spain.
Participation: the Digital Meeting is open to university teachers of Information
Science of both countries and provides the opportunity for the participants to
share information on teaching or research.
Conditions of admission: to publish papers in this space previous registration
is required. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to decline publication
of papers tha do not match the themes and objectives of the meeting.
Forums: its is contemplated that papers will be categorized according to
principal thematic areas, and if it is considered interesting, also electronic
conferences will be established to provide forums for those specific areas.
These virtual meetings will prepare the plattform for public discussion during
the meeting.
Submission of papers:
Language: English or Spanish, but with a title, abstract and key-words in
English
Format: all papers must be in "html" with graphic files in "gif" or "jpg"
Deadline for submit papers: March 12th 2000

The meeting registration fee is 45,000 ptas. (172 pounds). However, if you
register before January 15th 2000 you can take advantage of the reduces fee of
35,000 ptas. (135 pounds).
