The lecture series, "The European Union at the Second Millennium:
Reflections and Resolutions" was opened by Hugo Young last October. There is
an urgent need for calm and searching reflection about the past and current
state of the European Union throughout its 15 member states. The EU is
manifestly at a crossroads and if those who live in it are to shape its
future, we must first examine its parts closely and understand how they are
presently operating.
Nowhere is the need for thought about Europe more compelling than Britain.
Over the last decade the public discourse on the EU has shifted from the
merely erratic, through uneven sensation and finally sunk to a level of
recycled prejudice. No one newspaper nor even one political leader was
responsible. The descent from incoherence to dogma and idee fixe was
collective.
In no part of discourse about Europe is prejudice more blatant than social
partnership. John Monks has been a consistent champion of social
partnership, and the TUC is sponsoring major initiatives to extend social
partnership practices throughout British industry. To what extent is social
partnership a "European" idea. What do European industrial relations
practices owe to social partnership? All this and more will be considered on
20 January.
