Our scanning was done by Image Processing Technologies
<http://www.iptimaging.com/> at a per-image price of US$0.57. At the time
we started there were few options; now more vendors offer grayscale, and I'm
sure there are several who could do your job well. I would certainly
recommend IPT, though. When there were problems or questions--and you may
be sure they will arise with any vendor--IPT was responsive and reasonable.
More to the point, they make the grayscale board used in the scanner (by
Mekel; the other grayscale scanner is Sunrise's) and so have a thorough
understanding of the whole process.
