I must take exception to this, even as little as I know about the
technical details. Assuming you are running MS Windows, or MacOS with
Virtual Memory turned on, whenever your computer runs out of RAM it hits
the hard drive. The hard drive, being a mechanical device, is *orders of
magnitude slower* than RAM. Work on a computer with not enough RAM, then
work on one with plenty and you'll know what the difference is. Modern
operating systems chew up a good chunk of 32MB, and most of what's left
the application (such as Adobe Photoshop) gets. That leaves precious
little for that 600dpi image you just scanned.
