We have $4 million project with over 50 gigabytes of information in the
Humanities (e.g., ethics, philos, relig), and XML is the key point of the
project. The other key point is Z39.50 indexing. Th etwo make a nice fit
and enable all the internetworking nad partnering one would hope for.
One IMPORTANT concern I have on reading your note, however, is your
concern on cost. I'm not sure where/how you're sourcing it, but the
benefits of XML should _include_ very competitive--if even cheaper--costs.
I'm not sure what you're being quoted or are setting up, but XML's cost
should _not_ be a sticking point if the quotes you're getting are fair.
OUr single biggest budget item is the keystroke-for-keystroke cost of
entering the data. We're doing all teh XML in-house, and mostly with free
tools. The learning curve is manageable.
However, if you only want to hand someone a stack of data/paper, and say
"Here, XML-ize this"-- then "katie-bar-the-door" on cost. Even if that's
the scenario, there is a lot of competition out there now, so shop around.
I can fill you in more, but our power's been out here in Atlanta, so I've
get a bit of a load of emails.
