CALL FOR PAPERS: THE USE OF GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN HISTORICAL
RESEARCH.
The 2000 Annual Meeting of the Social Science History Association (SSHA)
will be held in Pittsburgh on the October 26-29. Following the success of
sessions exploring historical applications of Geographical Information
Systems (GIS) at previous SSHA conferences in Fort Worth, 1999, and
Chicago, 1998, we are hoping to organise at least one further session in
2000 as part of the historical geography network.
Although any papers involving the use of GIS in historical research would
be welcomed, we are particularly interested in organising a session on what
GIS is likely to be able to offer to historical research. Many people are
now familiar with the basic concepts of GIS and are using packages such as
ArcView and MapInfo to aid their research. It is now time to take a step
back from this and examine the potentials and pitfalls of GIS-based methods
in their wider academic context. Papers on this could either take the form
of theoretical discussions, or of case studies highlighting that GIS offers
the potential to devise new methodologies and/or paradigms within
historical research.
We must submit sessions to the conference organisers by the end of January
so time is of the essence. For now, all that is required are titles, short
abstracts (a single paragraph), and details of the author(s). These should
include titles, institutional affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and
fax numbers as well as e-mail addresses. Before your paper can appear on
the final program you must register for the meeting; the necessary forms
will be sent to you once you are on the provisional programme.
