As a sociologist working for an international nature conservation
organisation I am looking for examples of social research into the
subject of nature conservation and related issues.
In my experience there is a wide range of literature in the field of
sociology of the environment, focussing on (among other subjects)
the rise of new social movements and the development of social
mechanisms and institutions dealing with environmental risks.
However this work frequently tends to focus on chemical and
physical quality of the environment, i.e. pollution of water, air and
soil.
Deterioration and protection of nature and wildlife have- as far as
know - not received the same amount of sociological attention
(although of course authors such as Eder, Macnaghten & Urry,
Burgess, Beck and others have addressed the subject)
I would be interested in identifying more examples of social
research into the way (post)modern society deals with problems
concerning the protection of nature. These could be theoretical
explorations of the subject as well as quantative and qualitative
empirial studies focussing on differences in perception and
appreciation of nature among different groups, discourse analysis,
decision making processes etc.
As we are currently investigating the possibilities of developing a
European research project looking into the way differences in socio-
economic and cultural context influence the success of
conservation policy and action, I would also be pleased to come
into contact with other social scientists interested in this topic.
