** Second Nature Presents **

Southeast Regional Workshop - Shaping a Sustainable Future: Best Practices
in Higher Education

March 17-19, 2000 at the Timber Ridge Conference Center in Mableton,
Georgia, USA

You are invited to attend this second in a series of workshops on The Best
Practices in Higher Education.

Join teams of colleagues from selected institutions in the southeast that
are doing some of the best work in transforming their schools to model
sustainability and to implement best practices throughout their
institutions.

This workshop will focus on practical, replicable and effective programs
and strategies for institutional transformation. You will take away
concrete ideas, effective tools and a new network of contacts to support
sustainability activities in all areas of your campus -- from curriculum
development to operations, research and community involvement.

Attend this event to:

- PROMOTE your experience advancing sustainability programs on your campus

- LEARN what innovative strategies are occurring at other institutions

- DIALOGUE with influential leaders in the Education for Sustainability
movement

- STRENGTHEN collaborations at your institution and in the region

- IDENTIFY strategies to accelerate and expand your institution's program

FEATURED SPEAKERS INCLUDE

David Orr
Author of Earth in Mind (1994) and Ecological Literacy (1992) and over 100
published articles, he is also the co-editor with David Eagan of The Campus
and Environmental Responsibility (1992), and The Global Predicament with
Marvin Soroos (1979). David Orr is currently Professor and Chair of the
Environmental Studies Program at Oberlin College. He is perhaps best known
as an environmental educator and for his pioneering work in environmental
literacy and campus ecology. His present work is focused on ecological
design. During the past three years, he spearheaded the effort to design
and build a $7 million Environmental Studies Center at Oberlin College.

Kevin Lyons
Author of Buying for the Future: Contract Management and the Environmental
Challenge, a practical guide to responsible purchasing and environmental
management. This publication is a guide to responsible purchasing and
environmental management, and provides insight into the environmental
impact that purchasing professionals can make on society in the
twenty-first century. He is currently head of purchasing at Rutgers
University, the Camden Campus.

INSTITUTIONS INVITED

Some of the colleges and universities invited include: Clark Atlanta
University, Clemson University, Duke University, Georgia Institute of
Technology, Emory University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Howard
University, Rice University, Spelman College, Tulane University, University
of Georgia, University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), University of
Virginia, and Xavier University. We hope to involve teams from each of
these institutions and will be pleased to include your institution, as

POSTER DISPLAY INFORMATION

Participants are expected to display posters describing their institutional
best practice/s. Posters should convey the following: the best practice/s,
how the best practice has impacted the campus, what strategies are
transferable to other institutions, and the indicators being used to gauge
success.

More specific guidelines on content, layout and materials will be provided
upon registration. Participants should expect to document, disseminate and
highlight their leadership in the Education for Sustainability movement.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This event is designed for the active participation of interdisciplinary
teams. For that reason, team attendance is strongly encouraged. Teams of

our Best Practices workshops, we encourage team composition to include
members from across the academic disciplines and functions of the
university, including: faculty, staff, students, administrators, facilities
personnel or community members.

WORKSHOP LOCATION

This workshop will be held at the Timber Ridge Conference Center, which is
on eleven tree filled acres just twenty minutes west of Atlanta in Cobb
County, Mableton, Georgia, USA. All meals and coffee breaks and evening
