Rebecca,
Apologies for the latenes of this contribution to your request - I have
been away from my email.
The suggested list seems to be aiming at two targets - 1) DC with
separate elements for Creator, Contributor and Publisher and 2) the
possibility of collapsing the three into one Agent element. As such it
was a bit confusing to think about the list of relators. (It contains
MARC codes that are synonyms of DC codes (Collaborator) DC elements that
are not currently in the MARC list (Creator) and an element that is in
both (Publisher))
Unless I have misunderstood the remit it might be easier to deal with the
two possibilities one at a time and produce this first list based on one
assumption or the other. If based on assumption 1), Creator,
Collaborator and Publisher can be removed.
That would leave:
Adaptor - OK
Distributor - OK
Editor - OK
Illustrator - OK but the definition may need broadening for DC
Sponsor - not sure about this, it could be problematic in that sponsor is
used in a variety of senses - not always implying a financial or
contractual relationship.
Translator - OK
Suggestions from list:
Performer - OK but it may raise one-to-one issues
Commentator - OK
Originator - uncertain about this. It seems to overlap with Creator to a
large extent. If no Creator is to be entered (e.g. Author is not
mandatory in UKMARC) then other roles can be catered for in other
existing elements or qualifiers. (?)
Compiler - uncertain about this. May conflict with Creator in that the
compiled resource is a 'work' in its own right.
Apologies in advance for any inconsistencies in reasoning - sent in
haste, hope it helps:-)
Robina

Our office, which maintains the MARC Code List for Relators, has been
asked to provide a short list or relators for general use taken from that
list. This should be a subset including only the most general relator
terms, with their codes and definitions taken from the MARC list. No more
than about 10 should be included. We have not included specific types of
creators, for instance.
We are asking for your feedback in terms of experience with general
applications. We have followed various principles in selecting this subset
of the MARC list, as indicated below.
Please send comments by Wednesday, 26 January. We have a short time frame
for this.
Proposed Relators list for general applications (Dublin Core)
Principles for inclusion:
1. The term is not specific to a material type.
2. Only general creator/author terms are used, rather than specific
ones.
3. Usage is for general application only; the broadest terms are
included.
4. Specific types of roles (e.g. illustrator) included are generally
for contributors, not creators.

Collaborator [clb]
Use for a person or corporate body that takes a limited part in the
elaboration of a work of another author or that brings complements

Creator: to be defined something like:
Use for an entity chiefly responsible for the content of a work.
(The definition for Author will be modified to limit it to generally
printed works, which is how it has been used and for which it was
originally defined.)
Distributor [dst]
Use for an agent or agency that has exclusive or shared marketing
rights for an item.
Editor [edt]
Use for a person who prepares for publication a work not primarily
his/her own, such as by elucidating text, adding introductory or

Illustrator [ill]
Use for the person who conceives, and perhaps also implements, a

Use for the person or agency that issued a contract or under the
auspices of which a work has been written, printed, published, etc.
Translator [trl]
Use for a person who renders a text from one language into another,
